Odin, god of rune-magic, wisdom, gods and war, was strolling along the sea-shore with his brothers Vili and Ve when they came across two tree-trunks that had drifted down a river. Odin thereupon turned them into a man and woman, then stopped to wonder what was missing. He decided to give them life and breath, while Vili offered them sense and movement, and Ve endowed them with faces, speech, sight and hearing.
